1. Water Spilling Over the Sides During Rain

This is the most obvious sign, and the one most homeowners notice first. If you see water pouring over the edge of your gutters instead of flowing through the downspout, they’re clogged — full stop. Even a moderate rain shouldn’t overflow a functioning gutter system.

2. Sagging or Pulling-Away Gutters

Gutters are only built to hold water, not standing debris. A gutter packed with wet leaves and sediment can weigh hundreds of extra pounds — enough to pull the fasteners away from your fascia board over time. If a section is sagging or visibly separating from the roofline, it’s likely been overloaded for a while.

3. Plant Growth in Your Gutters

If you can see little sprouts or weeds growing out of your gutters, there’s enough decomposed organic material in there to act like a planter box — a sign gutters haven’t been cleaned in a long time.

4. Water Stains or Streaking Below the Gutter Line

Dark streaks running down your siding from the gutter, or water stains on your fascia board, mean water has been overflowing for a while, even if you haven’t caught it in the act during a storm.

5. Pests Around the Roofline

Standing water and decomposing leaves in a clogged gutter are exactly what mosquitoes, wasps, and rodents look for. If you’ve noticed more pest activity near your roofline lately, it’s worth checking your gutters as a possible cause.

Why It Matters More Than It Seems

Clogged gutters aren’t just a maintenance inconvenience — over time they can lead to:

• Roof leaks, from water backing up under shingles
• Foundation issues, from water pooling too close to your home
• Fascia and soffit rot, from prolonged water exposure
• Basement or crawlspace moisture problems

A gutter cleaning is a small cost compared to any of the above.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?

For most homes in our service area, twice a year — once in late spring after pollen season, and once in late fall after leaves drop — keeps gutters functioning the way they should. Homes surrounded by mature trees may need a third check mid-summer.
